Our goal is to train drivers to a standard that ensures they are proactive and defensive. We utilise the ACT Government Logbook and Competency-Based Training System to teach and assess students for their Provisional Licence. While this method averages 10–14 lessons for completion, the pace is always tailored to the individual learner.

For NSW drivers, we offer comprehensive training to prepare you for the government driving test. Our curriculum goes beyond minimum standards, covering not just practical skills, but also fostering the correct attitude required for safe driving on Australian roads.

We conduct lessons in the ACT and Queanbeyan.

Booking and paying online is simple. Reminders will be sent automatically so you don't miss a lesson. All past and upcoming lessons can be viewed through the online student portal.

Cancellation and rescheduling policy

Individual Scheduled Services - All one-on-one driving lessons require a minimum of 24 hours’ notice for cancellation or rescheduling.To cancel or reschedule, use your online account, which is accessible 24/7 via the website linked to your account. Cancellations via phone, email, SMS, or voicemail are only processed on the next business day. If this falls within 24 hours of your lesson, you will forfeit the full price of the lesson. To avoid forfeiting your lesson, always cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours in advance through your online account. You may reschedule cancelled lessons as often as necessary, provided the 24-hour notice period is met. You can learn more here.

What does a driving lesson cover?

At Fifth Gear Motoring, each driving lesson is tailored to your individual learning journey. We kick off every session by understanding your priorities. Whether your goal is mastering the ACT logbook competencies for your provisional licence, honing specific driving skills like smooth parking or navigating roundabouts, getting ready for your crucial government one-off practical driving assessment, or simply boosting your confidence on the road, our expert instructors are here to guide you.

How many lessons will it take to complete my competencies?

The number of lessons can vary from person to person, so we tailor our approach to each student's needs. While the log book method requires a minimum of 7 lessons, most learners typically feel confident and ready after around 10-15 lessons. The best way to get a clearer picture for yourself is to book an initial lesson. Our experienced instructors can assess your current skill level and give you a more personalized estimate of the lessons you might need to reach the required standard.

Can I change to automatic lessons if I decide I don't want to learn manual anymore?

Yes. At any time when learning manual you can change to automatic without having to redo any competencies. Although, if you are learning automatic and decide you want your manual licence you will need to redo all your competencies in a manual.

Do I get three hours in my logbook instead of one with a driving instructor?

Yes. For your first ten lessons with an accredited driving instructor a one hour lesson will count as three hours towards your logbook. After the first ten lessons, each hour will only count as one hour. You can also complete the Safer Driver Course for 20 hours and the Vulnerable Road User Program for 10 additional hours.
